South Africa has laid to rest a rare trailblazer in African traditional leadership, Hosi Phylia N’wantwa II, the first female Hosi (traditional ruler) in the Tsonga/Shangaan nation, who passed on at the age of 84.
Her installation in 2018 broke centuries of male-only succession traditions and made history across the African continent. Then-President Cyril Ramaphosa described her ascension as a bold step towards gender inclusion in traditional institutions, affirming that culture must grow to reflect justice and equality.
Hosi Phylia N’wantwa II was widely respected as a philanthropist, peacemaker, and mother of her people, known for championing community development, women’s inclusion, and youth empowerment.
At her burial ceremony, her daughter and princes paid glowing tribute, describing her as:
“An epitome of a book — the rock that never cried.”
Her reign will be remembered as a turning point in the history of African traditional rulership, proving that leadership is about capacity, not gender.

Who Takes Over?
Succession to the throne is guided by royal customs of the N’wantwa royal house. As at the time of filing this report, the royal family is expected to announce a successor after traditional rites and consultations. The process may involve the royal council and elders, in line with custom and law.
