Port Harcourt stood still as dignitaries, political leaders, and sympathizers gathered in their numbers for a solemn yet powerful Night of Tribute in honour of late Senator Barinada Mpigi. The atmosphere was charged with emotion as Rivers State witnessed an unprecedented turnout to celebrate a life of impact, service, and legacy.
A Life of Service and Influence

Late Barinada Mpigi (1961 – February 19, 2026) was a distinguished Nigerian politician who represented Rivers South-East Senatorial District in the National Assembly. Until his passing, he served as Chairman of the Senate Committee on Works, playing a key role in overseeing federal road infrastructure across Nigeria.
News of his death in a London hospital after a brief illness sent shockwaves across the nation, plunging the National Assembly into mourning.

The tribute event attracted top political figures including:
Siminalayi Fubara

Their presence underscored the weight of the loss and the respect the late senator commanded.

Tributes from Colleagues & Family
Lee Maeba, who confirmed his passing, described it as:
“A huge loss to the Ogoni people and Nigeria at large.”
Fellow lawmakers shared heartfelt memories:
A colleague recalled Mpigi as fearless and vibrant, always ready to contribute meaningfully on the Senate floor.
Another described him as a workaholic and committed leader.
Family Reflections:
Chief Dr. Monday Mpigi, his younger brother, spoke emotionally:
“He was a dependable rock of the family… a man of trust, generosity, and unwavering support.”
Chief Eddy Anababa, representing the Rivers Elders Council, noted:
“He distinguished himself as a voice of reason and wisdom… his demise leaves a vacuum.”

Legacy That Speaks
Senator Mpigi was not just a politician but a bridge-builder, a voice for his people, and a man deeply committed to development in Rivers State. His contributions, especially in infrastructure and legislative service, remain a lasting testament to his dedication.

Though gone, his legacy continues to echo in the corridors of leadership and in the hearts of those he touched.
Indeed, an icon has exited—but his impact remains eternal.
Nyesom Wike says very reliable and trusted..I met him in 1999 when we contested chairmanship election.
