The African Democratic Congress (ADC) National Convention in Abuja has set the tone for a renewed opposition movement, as key political figures delivered strong messages on democracy, resistance, and the future of Nigeria’s political landscape.
Atiku’s Charge: No Going Back
Former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, declared with conviction:
“No retreat, no surrender. The journey has begun.”
His statement signals a determined push by opposition forces to reposition ahead of future political contests.
David Mark: Resistance Against One-Party System
The ADC National Chairman, David Mark, emphasized:
“We would not surrender. Every threat to turn Nigeria into a one-party state will be resisted.”
He further stressed the role of Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), insisting that the commission must strictly adhere to the provisions of the 1999 Constitution, especially in recognizing and attending party conventions.
Aregbesola: Parties Have Rights
Former Osun State Governor, Rauf Aregbesola, maintained a constitutional stance:
“APC is a political party. It has the right to continue its activities.”
His remarks underline the legal balance between ruling and opposition parties within a democratic framework.
Dele Momodu: Democracy Under Pressure
Media mogul and ADC stalwart, Dele Momodu, expressed concern:
He described the current political climate as troubling, noting that many are “embarrassed to see a democrat act like a dictator.”
He lamented the weakening of opposition voices, alleging that pressure has been mounted on the four major opposition parties.
Despite the dominance of the ruling party, he pointed out visible “panic everywhere,” even with 32 governors.
Momodu added a striking remark:
“Everybody in ADC is a goalkeeper… They are making ADC popular.”
Political Undertones
Senate President Godswill Akpabio was described as “a gentleman,” while
Nyesom Wike was referenced as a key enforcer within the current power structure.
The Bigger Picture
The convention reflects a growing narrative:
Rising opposition unity
Concerns over democratic balance
Emergence of ADC as a stronger alternative platform
Momodu concluded with a forward-looking assertion that while Bola Ahmed Tinubu (Asiwaju) remains a dominant figure, history may record this era as one that reshaped — and possibly disrupted — opposition politics.
VENO tv Verdict:
Nigeria’s political space is heating up. With bold declarations from ADC leaders, the battle for democratic space and political relevance has clearly begun.
