VENO tv EDITORIAL!SEASON OF WITHDRAWAL: LET OTHER POLITICIANS EMULATE
Date: 16-05-26

The recent withdrawal of Senator Aminu Waziri Tambuwal from the Senatorial race in Sokoto State has once again opened discussions on leadership sacrifice, political maturity and the urgent need to create space for younger generations in Nigerian politics.

According to Senator Tambuwal, his decision was not because he was quitting politics, but to give new entrants the opportunity to perform and contribute their quota to nation-building. He also maintained that there is no crack within the ADC in Sokoto State, stressing that his desire is to promote younger politicians who are ready to serve.
Tambuwal’s political journey speaks volumes. Since joining active politics in 2003, he has served continuously for over two decades — as a member of the House of Representatives, Speaker of the House, Governor of Sokoto State for eight years, and now a serving Senator as well as a chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC). After about 24 years in the political system, his decision to step aside for younger people deserves commendation.
In the same vein, another political development emerged involving House of Representatives aspirant, Mahmud Sadis Buba of Sabon Gari Federal Constituency, who reportedly withdrew from the race after controversies surrounding his age. Reports alleged that although he claimed to be 30 years old, details from his NIN and passport suggested otherwise.
Explaining his withdrawal, Mahmud Sadis Buba stated:
“My withdrawal is not a sign of weakness but a sacrifice for the greater good of the party. I assure you that I remain a faithful party member and am committed to working tirelessly to ensure the victory of the party’s consensus candidate and the party at large at the polls.
I ask my supporters to remain calm, united, and to throw their full weight behind the party’s decision and whoever emerges as the party’s candidate.”
This medium strongly believes in transparency, fairness and equal opportunities in politics. Politics must not become a permanent occupation where a few individuals continue to dominate power endlessly while capable younger minds remain sidelined.
Any aspirant who has spent decades occupying political offices should not wait to be persuaded before stepping aside. Political parties themselves must encourage fresh ideas and new leadership by creating room for competent individuals who can move the nation forward.
Nigeria is blessed with intelligent, vibrant and visionary young politicians who can turn things around positively if given the opportunity. Greed, selfishness and the mentality of “only me” must be discouraged for democracy to truly thrive.
Democracy must work in Nigeria.
