When the history of Lagos high society, fashion, and indigenous entrepreneurship is written, the name Chief Olayiwola "Layi" Amoje will certainly occupy a prominent place.
Born on September 17, 1944, Chief Amoje has become a household name, especially among lovers of Yoruba culture, music, fashion, and traditional values. At over 82 years of age, he remains one of the most respected figures to emerge from Awe Town in Oyo State.

For decades, nearly all the leading Yoruba musicians sang his praises, celebrating his generosity, business success, and influence. While many remember the tributes by the late Baba Commander, others still cherish the memorable musical rendition by the legendary Sir Shina Adewale, which captured the essence of the Amoje phenomenon.

Chief Amoje built his reputation through the business of high-quality footwear. During the golden era of Lagos social life in the 1980s and 1990s, he was regarded as one of the foremost shoe merchants in the country.
His clientele included distinguished personalities, traditional rulers, businessmen, and members of Nigeria's elite class. Among those associated with his patronage was Prince Okunade Sijuwade, who later ascended the throne as the revered Oba Okunade Sijuwade.
Beyond footwear, Chief Amoje was admired for his impeccable dressing and fashion sense. His appearance, elegance, and attention to detail made him one of the trendsetters of Lagos society during his active years.

Traditional Honour and Influence

Chief Amoje's influence extends beyond business and social circles. He is the Okanlomo of Awe Kingdom, a traditional title that reflects his contributions to community development and his standing among traditional institutions.
This dual identity as a successful entrepreneur and respected traditional chief has earned him admiration across generations.

A Grand Celebration of Legacy

His 80th birthday celebration in September 2024 was a remarkable gathering of Nigeria's social and political elite.

The thanksgiving service was held at St. Anthony Catholic Church, followed by a grand reception at Balmoral Event Centre.
Guests were treated to performances by legendary music icons Chief Commander Ebenezer Obey and King Sunny Ade.
The event attracted notable personalities including Ademola Adeleke, Olusegun Osoba, Gbenga Daniel, Oba Saheed Elegushi, and numerous members of prestigious social clubs across Lagos.

A Life Worth Celebrating

One striking feature many admirers still notice is his unique sense of style. Even at over 82 years old, Chief Amoje continues to carry himself with dignity, confidence, and elegance

—A testament to a life well lived.
