VENO International Magazine Weekly Editorial: Cooking Gas Scarcity — Nigerians Groan as Prices Soar
Date: 04-06-26

The effect of the growing tension between the United States and Iran over the Strait of Hormuz is gradually being felt across the global energy market, with Nigeria not left out. The price of cooking gas has risen sharply in many parts of the country, with some consumers reportedly paying as much as ?2,500 per kilogram amid widespread scarcity.
As the situation worsens, many households are reluctantly returning to the use of charcoal and firewood for cooking. The continued increase in the cost of cooking gas by marketers is placing additional pressure on families already battling economic hardship, and there appears to be no immediate end in sight.
Reports indicate that several gas outlets have little or no product available for sale. Industry operators have attributed the scarcity to supply challenges and fluctuations in the international market. Consumers, however, are left to bear the burden as prices continue to climb beyond the reach of ordinary Nigerians.
On the international scene, there are indications that diplomatic efforts may soon ease tensions in the Middle East. Former U.S. President Donald Trump recently expressed optimism that the dispute involving Iran could be resolved, a development many hope will help stabilize global energy prices.
While Nigerians struggle with rising living costs, the country is also facing an alarming surge in insecurity. Cases of kidnapping continue to spread across several states. The recent abduction of the wife and twin children of a relative of former Minister of Power, Chief Bayo Adelabu, has heightened public concern. Reports have also emerged of passengers allegedly being kidnapped along the Eruku Road in Kwara State.
The growing wave of kidnappings is giving many Nigerians sleepless nights. Adding to the controversy, activist Chief Sunday Igboho has alleged that some politicians are linked to certain abduction cases in Ibadan and has threatened to reveal names if the trend continues.
As citizens grapple with economic hardship and security challenges, many are asking the same question: Who will save us?
This week's edition is richly packed with informative stories, features, interviews, and inspiring reports. We invite you to read, reflect, and share your feedback with us.
