The Federal Government's decision to establish an Ebola Preparedness Task Force and approve ?10 billion for emergency response has sparked widespread debate across Nigeria.
At the center of the controversy is the appointment of the President's Chief of Staff, Femi Gbajabiamila, to head the task force. Many Nigerians have questioned the rationale behind the appointment, arguing that public health experts and epidemiologists should be leading such an initiative.
While government officials insist the move is a proactive measure to prevent any possible outbreak, critics have described it as a misplaced priority, especially as the country battles insecurity, unemployment, poor power supply, and economic hardship.
Social media platforms have been flooded with reactions ranging from skepticism to outright condemnation, with many citizens asking whether the ?10 billion allocation could have been better utilized in addressing pressing national challenges.
Some commentators described the development as "another political project," while others defended the government, noting that preparedness is better than waiting for a health crisis before taking action.
Public health experts have also emphasized that disease surveillance and emergency preparedness remain essential components of national health security, even when there are no confirmed cases within the country.
As the debate continues, Nigerians await further clarification on how the approved funds will be utilized and what specific measures the task force intends to implement to safeguard public health.
