As Osun State prepares for Saturday’s governorship election, one question continues to occupy my mind concerning the APC candidate, Asiwaju Munirudeen Bola Oyebamiji (AMBO).
AMBO is not a political novice. He has experience in banking, public finance and public administration, including service as Osun State Commissioner for Finance and as Managing Director/CEO of the National Inland Waterways Authority.
However, if this man wins Saturday’s election on the platform of the APC, I fear he may become a political puppet rather than an independent governor.
This is my opinion, not an allegation of wrongdoing against him.
My concern is this: Who will actually be in charge of Osun if AMBO becomes governor? Will he have the political independence to take decisions based solely on the interests of Osun people, or will powerful interests within and outside the state determine the direction of his administration?
AMBO emerged as the APC candidate through a consensus process after other aspirants backed his candidacy. Today, the APC is mounting a major campaign to return to power in Osun, while AMBO himself has promised inclusive government, youth empowerment and development if elected.
But winning an election is one thing; having the courage and independence to govern is another.
If AMBO wins, Osun people should watch carefully to see whether they have elected Governor Bola Oyebamiji or merely installed a government whose important decisions are dictated by political godfathers.
A governor must be accountable first to the people who elected him—not to those who helped him secure the ticket or political power.
Saturday belongs to the electorate. Let Osun people vote according to their conscience, and let the election be peaceful, free, fair and credible.
