The political battle ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 presidential election appears to be gathering momentum as African Democratic Congress (ADC) chieftain and former Kogi West Senator, Dino Melaye, faulted the composition of the newly announced APC Presidential Campaign Council.
Melaye, speaking in a video circulating online, questioned the decision to have President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who is seeking another term, also serve as chairman of his party’s Presidential Campaign Council.
According to Melaye, the arrangement raises questions about the confidence of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the array of political heavyweights, governors and other senior figures available within the party.
He argued that it was unusual for a presidential candidate to simultaneously chair the campaign council established to prosecute his own election.
Melaye also criticised what he described as repetitions and questionable appointments contained in the council list. He further alleged that some individuals included in the campaign structure have faced allegations or controversies in the past.
Particular attention was drawn to Zacch Adedeji, a senior public revenue official, over his reported campaign fundraising role.
Melaye questioned the propriety of involving the head of a major federal revenue institution in partisan campaign fundraising, arguing that such an arrangement deserves legal and public scrutiny.
He indicated that he intends to approach the court to challenge aspects of the arrangement.
The APC campaign council, meanwhile, brings together several prominent figures within the ruling party, with President Tinubu serving as chairman, Vice President Kashim Shettima and APC National Chairman Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda serving as vice chairmen, while former Zamfara State Governor Senator Abdulaziz Yari serves as Director-General.
With opposition figures intensifying their criticism of the ruling party’s campaign machinery, the political temperature ahead of 2027 is clearly beginning to rise.
VENO tv will continue to monitor developments as the battle for Nigeria’s presidency gathers momentum.
