Social Diary with Kayode Adoide +2348033340285:
Veteran pro-democracy activist and former Secretary and spokesman of the National Democratic Coalition, NADECO, Chief Ayo Opadokun, has celebrated his 80th birthday in Lagos with a service of thanksgiving and hymns.
The colourful celebration, held at Ikate Baptist Church, Surulere, Lagos, brought together family members, friends, political associates, professional colleagues and fellow pro-democracy campaigners who came to thank God for Opadokun’s life and decades of service to Nigeria.
The ceremony was marked by thanksgiving, hymns and glowing tributes celebrating a man whose life has been closely associated with Nigeria’s struggle against military dictatorship and the campaign for the restoration of democratic rule.
Former Governor of Ogun State and chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, Aremo Olusegun Osoba, paid tribute to Opadokun’s courage, resilience and unwavering commitment during the pro-democracy struggles.
Osoba recalled the sacrifices made by Opadokun and other prominent activists who stood against military dictatorship, saying their struggles contributed significantly to the eventual restoration of democratic governance in Nigeria in 1999.
He also paid tribute to other leading figures in the democratic struggle, including Prof. Wole Soyinka, Chief Gani Fawehinmi, Dr. Beko Ransome-Kuti, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, Dr. Joe Okei-Odumakin, Olisa Agbakoba, Richard Akinnola and Baba Omojola, among several others.
Osoba prayed that Opadokun would enjoy many more years in good health and have the opportunity to witness the fruits of the democratic struggle to which he devoted a significant part of his life.
Also speaking, the President of Women Arise and former President of the Campaign for Democracy, Dr. Joe Okei-Odumakin, described Opadokun as a consistent freedom fighter and apostle of social justice whose humility and selflessness distinguished him throughout the struggle for democracy.
She praised his steadfastness, courage and commitment to the Nigerian people, wishing her longtime comrade-in-arms many more fruitful years and “a glory that never dims.”
At 80, Opadokun’s story remains one of grace, grit, courage and sacrifice—a journey that has taken him through activism, detention, advocacy and national service.
For family members, friends and associates who gathered to celebrate him, the occasion was not merely about attaining the age of 80, but about celebrating a life devoted to justice, democracy and the pursuit of a better Nigeria.
Happy 80th Birthday, Chief Ayo Opadokun.
