VENO tv: FOREIGN NEWS SANDERS WARNS OVER RAPID AI DEVELOPMENT AS TECH FIRMS DISCUSS NEW SAFETY STANDARDS BODY
Date: 16-09-26

United States Senator Bernie Sanders has renewed his warning over the rapid development of Artificial Intelligence, calling for stronger safeguards before increasingly powerful AI systems move beyond effective human control.

Sanders has urged major technology companies to slow the development of advanced AI, arguing that governments and the public should not allow a handful of technology companies to determine the future of such a powerful technology without adequate oversight. In September, Sanders and Representative Greg Casar announced proposed legislation that would temporarily pause certain advanced AI development until a federal regulator establishes safety rules, while seeking to prohibit the development of artificial superintelligence.

His intervention comes as leading AI companies Anthropic, OpenAI and Google have reportedly been discussing the creation of a new industry body that could establish common safety standards for advanced artificial intelligence.
According to reports, executives within the companies have considered closer coordination as concerns grow that the fierce competition to build increasingly powerful AI systems may be moving faster than existing safety mechanisms and regulations.

The debate has intensified following calls from some leading technology executives for independent safety evaluations, greater transparency and stronger government oversight. However, there remains disagreement in Washington over whether tighter regulation could slow American technological innovation and weaken the country's competitive position.
Sanders maintains that the fundamental issue is not simply how powerful AI becomes, but who controls it, who benefits from it and what safeguards are put in place to protect workers and society.

The emerging debate is expected to remain one of the major global technology and political issues as governments struggle to balance innovation, economic opportunity and public safety.
