VENO NEWS: OPINION: TRIBUTE TO A HERO! By Sunday Ade Ojo
Date: 03-09-22

Anyone, especially a man, who is admired by many people (not everyone) for doing something brave/courageous or good, is a HERO. Whatever one does, bad or good, it is normal that not everybody will like or pay attention to it. People have enemies. Even God has enemies. No blasphemy!

The last leader of the Soviet Union aka USSR, a proudly Russian, MIKHAIL GORBACHEV, was a hero, an iconic being much loved and admired by many across the world. Some people might not be valued until after death. Also, that is a natural phenomenon. Death is inevitably inevitable and visits everyone. It is a debt every living creature has to pay.

Sadly, on Tuesday August 30, the humble and well respected Mikhail Gorbachev, a man who ruled the former Soviet Union from 1985 to 1991 (the year ironically the Union collapsed), passed away in Moscow, the Russian Federation, after a protracted illness aged 91. He seemingly had a destiny with the number 91.

His expected death has since reverberated around the globe with outpouring of condolences, goodwill messages and tributes from many world leaders and right-thinking people all over the planet Earth. The Nigerian leader and many African leaders are not left out. Well deserved!

Gorbachev was particularly friendly and helpful to the blessed continent, unfortunately made hopeless by its corrupt and myopic leaders. Angola, Namibia and South Africa shall not forget in a hurry the tremendous help and support given by the likeable Russian man while in power and even afterwards. He deserves every tribute and reflection.

Mikhail Gorbachev, within a short time in power, released all political detainees and engaged in dialogue with the opposition as well as the Western countries. He, however, had a mixed legacy - while many people love him for ending the cold war and doing extraordinary things, others, including the incumbent president of Russia, Vladimir Putin and some hardliners in the country loathe him, with great passion, for being responsible for the disintegration of the Soviet Union. Such is life! No Empire survives forever.

Gorbachev was not hawkish like the arrogant Putin who has reluctantly sent a terse condolence message. He believed in 'jaw-jaw' rather than 'war-war'. He was ambitious and not over-ambitious. If his likes were to be in power in the present day Russia, there would not have been a senseless invasion/war in Ukraine. Every independent/sovereign, peaceful and above all democratic nation deserves respect and NOT cheating/bullying.

Obviously, Mikhail Gorbachev did not like the Russian aggression in Ukraine but understandably remained silent. He did not grant any interview in that regard due to illness and not because he was scared of being assassinated as anybody in Russia who criticises or calls for an end to the war or does not use the phrase 'special military operation' is dead or cut-off permanently.

Gorbachev was a statesman and God-fearing man. He was a peaceful man as his name was synonymous with peace. He was a loving man. He did strive to and have a good relationship with America and generally the West. Gorbachev was kind and considerate and hence will be hugely missed. Prayers and thoughts are with the bereaved family and the like-minded Russians. May his soul rest in peace!

Finally, as Mikhail Gorbachev finally goes home or is buried TODAY, many people will definitely attend his funeral to pay their last respects. According to the Kremlin spokesman, Vladimir Putin won't attend because he is too busy, as busy as a bee. How original! Perhaps, he is scared/afraid of assassination. Recall the daughter of one of his brains was mistakenly assassinated instead of the brain himself last month.

Undoubtedly, Putin too, is a potential target. He is NOT God and understands the language of force/assassination. He has played with fire and must be consumed/burnt in it. Oloriburuku! He is the polar opposite of Gorbachev. By next month, Putin will be 70 years old. Age difference of 21 between him and Gorbachev. Will he live long to the very ripe age of 91? Time (not Time Magazine) will tell.

The funeral is ongoing right now and will be a success. Putin's absence won't be felt. Very proud/pompous guy. Adieu the man of the people, MIKHAIL GORBACHEV! The story continues... Peace!
