The Area Commander of TRACE, Ogun West 4, Mr Adekunle Ajibade, gave the warning in a reaction to the ordeal of a driver in the hands of TRACE officials before, during and after apprehension recently
Ajibade emphatically revealed that public is aware of operational mandate of TRACE, a Traffic Management Agency saddled strictly to ensure free flow of traffic at all times, on all road networks and in every situation, with the aim to improve safety, reduce crashes and deaths on Ogun roads .
According to the Area Commander, TRACE, Ogun West 4, said, they are able to achieve through sensitisation, enlightenment, enforcement of roads traffic regulations and apprehension.
He noted that their brief doesn't include construction, rehabilitation and maintenance of road networks, but to ensure compliance to traffic regulations and apprehension of offenders on roads within Ogun State.
He says, it should be noted that it's not possible to arrest every traffic offenders, but they can only arrest those they can, using them as deterrent to others.Series of crimes perpetrated in our cuties and towns but only few end up being caught by the long arm of the law.
On the strong reference to the high handedness of our men, there are penalty specifying to deter offenders or allowing a repeat of such by those apprehended .
Aside the fines meted against violators, detainment for not less than 24 hours is prescribed, a compulsory attendance of a public enlightenment class is recommended, seizure of driver's license for a speculated period of time, and a recommendation that such a person must be made to undergo psychiatric tests at Aro Psychiatric Hospital in Abeokuta
He however reveals that the stipulated government fine for driving against traffic is #91,000 which will be charged aside other sundry charges at the discretion of the arresting command officer and there's strict order that no officer, no matter his rank is permitted to reduce statutory penalties, especially when booking has been made as the case of a pure water driver, which can only be reduced by the State Government and on rare occasion by TRACE Corps Commander.
At this junction, it's good to note that no official of our agency will unilaterally earmark an amount for any offender outside the statutory stipulations by the government.He said
