March 12th, 2025 was an historic day that heralded Oke Eri, the pioneering of Ijebu ancestry, into a new traditional Coronet Status, marking the fulfilment of their progenitors’ dream since 153 years of the Stool existence.
Glamourously, the epoch event witnessed the official presentation of the instrument of approval and Staff of office from Ogun State government to *His Royal Highness Alaiyeluwa Oba Babatunde Adegboyega Oredipe* as the first Coronet Oba in the history of Oke Eri confederation.
It was the celebration of their Stool’s upgrade from Baaleship to Coronet Status, a monumental achievement that brought the protracted dream of their progenitors into a fulfillment.
Oke Eri, as history posited, is a unique conglomeration of ancient sixteen settlememts that evolved from the collapsed Eredo (first epi Jebu commerce center), but which later coalesed in 1872 to formed a new federation called Sangotedo, which later metamorphosed to Oke Eri kingdom.
Historically, Oke Eri and Sagamu were two unique coalitions founded in the same year 1872, consequent upon incessant invasions of slave racketering. While 13 settlements came together forming Sagamu, 16 merged to form Oke Eri federation.
In its etymology, the name Oke Eri was an appelation derived from the aquatic nature of the environment before it was faded off. History has it that the place known as Oke Eri today was surrounded by massive river, a large expanse of water that connected Ijari, Ijebu Ode till getting to Epe. The river course is still evident till date.
Literaly, Oke Eri means *On Top Of River* - a habitation settled on a high hill above the river course. Likewise, Ijari- *he who experts to paddle or swim river* - a progenitor who accompanied Obanta to Ijebu.
Historical fact has it that the same Awujale Fidipote consented and approved the merger of both Oke Eri and Sagamu with their respective ancestral deities: Sango in Oke Eri and Orisagamu in Sagamu. This Remo coalition invigorated them to fight their independence from Awujale, beginning from 1891 till 1937.
Since 1872, Oke Eri was primitively called Sangotedo because of the Sango deity brought from Ijebu Ode as symbol of constitution that grouped the area into four Provinces.
It was agreed on oath that the rulership would be rotational among the four Provinces: Eti, Erimogun (turned Oke Eri), Ilefun and Oke Ariyo (a woman from Ile Ife in company of Obanta).
The first traditional ruler of Oke Eri emerged from Eti Province in 1872, followed by Oke Eri, Ilefun and Oke Ariyo.
Following the completion of the rotational cycle of the four Provinces since 1972, it was the turn of ETI to produce the next ruler.
At this juncture, a new cycle begins, not as Baale but a Coronet Oba in the person of *Alaiyeluwa Babatunde Adegboye Oredipe* from Akanwun Owe dynasty of ETI Province in Oke Eri.
This is the beginning of an astronomical transformation, orchestrating developmental revolution and making Oke Eri name continue to ring bell globaly.
So shall it be.
