The literary world bids farewell to one of its most towering figures, Ng?g? wa Thiong’o, the legendary Kenyan writer and intellectual whose works shaped the minds of generations across Africa and beyond. For students of literature in the 1980s and 1990s, Ng?g? was more than just a name — he was a cornerstone of African thought, resistance, and storytelling.
Best known for his groundbreaking novels such as Weep Not, Child and Petals of Blood, Ng?g? gave voice to the African experience in a post-colonial world. His writings did not merely tell stories; they challenged systems, stirred the conscience, and inspired revolutionary thought. To many, he remains the true father of modern African literature.
For those who encountered his books in their formative years, the impact was indelible. Weep Not, Child, his debut novel and the first major novel in English by an East African, opened a window into the soul of a continent grappling with identity, struggle, and hope.
Now, the literary giant has taken his final bow — he has gone home. But his legacy, etched in ink and memory, lives on powerfully.
Ng?g? wa Thiong’o’s life is not just to be mourned, but celebrated. He wrote, he taught, he fought — and through his words, he lives still.
Rest in peace, Ng?g?. Africa salutes you.
