The Alake and Paramount Ruler of Egbaland, Oba Dr. Adedotun Aremu Gbadebo III, CFR, has remained one of the notable traditional rulers who chose to maintain a monogamous marriage despite coming from a royal background where polygamy was common.
The revered monarch, who celebrated his 83rd birthday on September 14, 2026, was born in Abeokuta on September 14, 1943, into the Laarun Ruling House.
Oba Gbadebo is married to Olori Tokunbo Gbadebo, and their marriage dates back to 1971. For more than five decades, the royal couple have remained together, with the monarch repeatedly making it clear that taking additional wives has never been his desire.
Speaking previously about his decision, the Alake explained that although he came from a polygamous family, he deliberately chose a different path for his own home.
His grandfather reportedly had 24 wives, while his father had three wives, but Oba Gbadebo decided that one wife was enough for him.
In an earlier interview, the respected monarch explained that there was no traditional requirement compelling an Alake to take another wife simply because he had ascended the throne. He said his experience growing up in a polygamous home influenced his decision to maintain a monogamous family.
His position has remained unchanged even after becoming the Alake of Egbaland in 2005.
The enduring marriage between the Alake and Olori Tokunbo has therefore become one of the remarkable aspects of his personal life, standing alongside his decades of service to Egbaland and the preservation of Egba culture and tradition.
