VENO TV: Rowdy Session as Reps Clash Over Real-Time Transmission Bill By Kayode Adoide
Date: 18-02-26

The House of Representatives on Tuesday descended into a rowdy session following a heated debate over the proposed bill on real-time transmission of election results, as lawmakers split sharply along party lines.
The motion, which sought to mandate the electronic and real-time transmission of election results, exposed deep divisions within the Green Chamber, with members of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) taking one position, while opposition lawmakers stood firmly on the other side.
During the voice vote, the majority carried the day with 55 votes against 15, effectively overruling the minority bloc that insisted on full transparency through real-time transmission of results.
The chamber was thrown into disorder as chants of “Ole! Ole!!” (meaning “thief”) rang out from aggrieved lawmakers and supporters within the gallery, signaling strong displeasure over the outcome of the vote.
Reacting to the development, Hon. Fred described the scene as unfortunate but revealing, noting that the outburst reflected both public frustration and the sharp partisan nature of the debate.
“The shout of ‘Ole’ shows the level of displeasure among Nigerians and also kudos to the opposition for standing their ground. We must remember that we are here to make laws for Nigerians, not for political parties,” Hon. Fred said.
Observers noted that the debate, which was expected to be a legislative engagement on electoral reforms, degenerated into a partisan contest, with lawmakers aligning strictly along APC versus opposition lines.
Political analysts warn that the division within the House over real-time transmission could have serious implications for public trust in the electoral process, especially as the country moves closer to the 2027 general elections.
Despite the tensions, the House leadership urged members to maintain decorum and reminded lawmakers that legislative decisions must be guided by national interest rather than party loyalty.
