South Africa witnessed fresh anti-immigration demonstrations on Tuesday as thousands of protesters marched through parts of Johannesburg, Durban, and other major cities, demanding stricter enforcement of the country's immigration laws.

The protesters insisted that undocumented migrants should leave the country, arguing that illegal immigration has placed pressure on jobs, public services, and the economy. Authorities deployed heavy police and security personnel across major cities to prevent violence and maintain order.

Police confirmed that several suspects were arrested over alleged looting and other criminal activities linked to the protests, while officials stressed that law enforcement would act against anyone engaging in violence regardless of nationality.

Meanwhile, South African authorities said thousands of undocumented migrants have been processed for voluntary departure, while many foreign nationals have chosen to leave the country ahead of the protests.

In Nigeria, another batch of 271 Nigerians arrived in Lagos from South Africa and are undergoing medical screening and resettlement procedures as part of the Federal Government's evacuation programme.

The Federal Government says it is exploring diplomatic and legal options to seek compensation for Nigerians who reportedly lost businesses, jobs, and property during the xenophobic crisis. Nigerian Ambassador to South Africa, Alexander Ajayi, disclosed that discussions have begun with South African authorities on issues affecting Nigerians and possible compensation for verified losses.

The returnees are also expected to benefit from humanitarian support. Reports indicate that MTN Nigeria has provided financial assistance of ?150,000 to each returnee in addition to other welfare packages to aid their reintegration.

The renewed protests have once again raised concerns over xenophobia, migration, and regional integration within Africa. While South Africa has the sovereign right to enforce its immigration laws, observers say such enforcement should be carried out lawfully and without violence or discrimination.
